Aging in Place - Living Longer and Living Stronger

The world loves to make aging sound like a scary movie, but let’s be real. Most of us are actually getting better at this life thing. Between 65 and 85, most people report being the happiest they’ve ever been. Why? Because you’ve survived the ups and downs, you know how to let the small stuff slide, and you can focus on what truly matters.

At East Central Minnesota Habitat for Humanity, we think your home should be your home base for all of that, not a source of stress. Our Aging in Place program is all about making a few smart tweaks so you can keep doing exactly what you love.

Here’s the Rundown on Staying at Home:

  • You Love Your Neighborhood - Staying in your familiar neighborhood keeps you connected to friends and neighbors, preventing “relocation stress”. In fact, staying socially connected can reduce the risk of dementia by 50%.
  • It Gives Time Back to You and Your Family - When we fix a doorway, add a ramp or grab bars, we aren’t just helping you move around. We’re giving your family time back - up to six hours a week - that they can spend visiting with you instead of worrying about you.
  • It’s an Investment in the Future - Only 1 in 10 homes is actually "aging-ready." By making your home accessible now, you’re creating a rare, high-value asset.
  • Keeps You Independent and In Control - Habitat’s program focuses on smart, preventive measures that can minimize or stop accidents before they happen.

Celebrating Older American’s Month...
This May, we’re highlighting the power of safe, stable housing. Habitat’s Aging in Place program isn’t just about fixing houses. We’re here to help you keep your independence. It’s about being smart, staying active, and enjoying the things you love.

...and more importantly, celebrating YOU!

If you've got a second, we’d love to hear from you!

  1. What’s the one thing in your house that makes you (or your kids) a little nervous?
  2. If Habitat has already visited, what’s it like waking up without that worry on your mind?
  3. What’s one thing you’re excited to do in the neighborhood this year?
  4. What’s the best part about being independent in your own home?
